Daniel Reuss

Conductor of the 2025 World Youth Choir session

Daniel Reuss (1961) studied choral conducting at the Rotterdam Conservatory with Barend
Schuurman. At the age of 21 he founded the Early Music Choir Arnhem. In 1990, Daniel Reuss became artistic director of Cappella Amsterdam. In recent years, under his artistic direction, the ensemble has acquired a prominent position in both early music and the modern and contemporary repertoire in the Netherlands.


From 2003 to 2006 he was chief conductor of the RIAS Kammerchor in Berlin. With this choir he made a number of successful CDs, such as Le Vin Herbé (Martin), Solomon (Händel) and Les Noces (Stravinsky). The CDs were awarded various prizes, including the Preis der Deutsche Schallplattenkritik, Echo Award, Diapason d'Or and Choc du Monde de la Musique.


From 2008 to 2013, Daniel Reuss combined his work as artistic director of Cappella Amsterdam with the chief conductorship of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
Daniel Reuss regularly collaborates with ensembles and orchestras from all over Europe, such as the Orchestra of the 18th Century, Akademie für Alte Musik, Rundfunkchor Berlin, Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla, Orquesta de Granada, Real Filharmonia de Galicia and Vocal Consort Berlin. He is a principal subject teacher at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, and gives masterclasses in choral conducting in Europe and beyond.


With Cappella Amsterdam he released very positively received CDs, such as Lux Aeterna (awarded the Diapason d'Or 2009), the CD with psalms by Sweelinck and the CD with Janáĉek Choral Works, which received an Edison. The CDs Missa Solemnis (Beethoven) and Ein Deutsches Requiem (Brahms) in collaboration with the Orchestra of the 18th Century and soloists such as Carolyn Sampson were also critically acclaimed.


From 2015-2020, Daniel Reuss was chief conductor of the Ensemble Vocal Lausanne.


In November 2016 he received the Robbon of Honour (Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw)

João de Almeida Barros

Assistant Conductor of the 2025 World Youth Choir Session

João Barros holds a master's degree in Choral Conducting and a bachelor's degree in Choral Conducting from Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. He studied piano at Conservatório D. Dinis and singing at Escola de Música do Conservatório Nacional.

During the same year, João founded Nova Era Vocal Ensemble. Since its establishment, the choir has received prizes such as a gold medal at the Festival Coral de Verão and the "Choir of the Choirs" award, along with first place at the Vocal Art Choir Competition. Nowadays, Nova Era Vocal Ensemble is recognized as one of the most prestigious choirs in Lisbon, regularly performing at Portugal's most important venues and collaborating with orchestras such as Divino Sospiro, Americantiga Ensemble and Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa.

 

Nova Era was led by conductors such as Daniel Reuss, Krista Audere and Kaspars Putniņš.
In 2018, João was awarded a scholarship by Interkultur for outstanding conducting achievements, providing him the opportunity to work with Andre Van der Mewer and the Rundfunk-Jugenchor Wernigerode. During the same year he was appointed as the artistic director for Coro Iscte


In 2024 he was one of the 8 semifinalists of Eric Ericson Award.

 

Furthermore, João Barros is the founder and the artistic director of the Lisbon Choral Conducting Masterclass.
